Natural Realism is the theme of Wilma van der Vliet's work. With her work she wants to make the small and vulnerable visible in nature, what we often ignore in busy daily life. Insects can be seen in many of her works. These are under strong pressure for various reasons, while they are indispensable as food for birds and as pollinators of our crops. But they are also extremely beautiful.

Wilma builds her work in many layers, so making a painting takes a lot of time. She works mainly in watercolor and oil paint, with the occasional trip to egg tempera or gouache. She is guided in the choice of material by the subject to be painted, in which fabric expression is very important.

About the work ‘Juffertjes’, ‘Love-in-a-mist’: ‘This flower painting evokes the style of traditional botanical art. The delicate stems, buds and bloom are painted in a highly realistic way. The insects around it add a decorative element and help to complete the image that might otherwise be too empty."
